Date Code Reference General Information The general date code information below can be used as a guide for evaluating the parts against the scheduled production date (SPD) if you are looking for a correct date code for a part. Note: The information and Illustrations below are just examples and are not from this vehicle . Engine Casting vs. Build Dates: The normal range is around 30-90 days prior to the SPD of a vehicle. The more common and high-volume production engine (i.e., six cylinders, 318 or 383) the closer the casting date will be to the final assembly date of the engine. Low production and high- performance engines like 440 +6 could be as high as 90 days and Hemi’s have been found to be as much as 8 months early. However, please keep in mind that there are exceptions to these guidelines. Engine Accessories: The engine parts and accessories dates vary. However, typically, they are close the casting date of the engine. However, some parts have both casting dates and assembly dates. Keep in mind that engine dress parts that are installed at the vehicle final plant (i.e., starters, alternators, distributors, carburetors etc.) are generally within 30-45 days SPD. This will vary based on the rarity of the components and/or vehicle Part Casting Vs. Build Dates To ensure that you have the proper part the casting and assembly dates must be reviewed. An example is alternators, and starters which have multiple dates that are often misunderstood. If you just review the casting date and assume that it is correct because it matches the production year you may be incorrect in your assumption. Starters have a casting date wheel on the solenoid housing. However, the assembly date is on the field coil housing. Vehicle Accessories: Keep in mind that parts that are installed onto the vehicle at the final assembly plant (i.e., door panels, instrument clusters, wheels, relays, bulbs, glass, radiators, horns, trunk mats etc) are generally within 30-45 days SPD of the vehicle. This will vary base on the rarity of the components and/or vehicle.
1969 alternator #28757749. The assy date is 34 th week of 1968 (Aug 17-21). casting date= 7 th month of 1968. Difference of 30 days (casting to assy)
1970 starter part # 2875560 and assy date of 21st week of 1970. The casting date on the solenoid housing was the 3 rd week of 1970.
Unique and rare parts are getting hard to find and expensive people are re stamping to make them look correct .
All cast engine parts will have some type of date code on them. Depending on the casting plant, how worn the mold is or how worn the part itself is it may be challenging to read the date
