1939 Bugatti Type 57C Gangloff Lot 64 | Offered without Reserve

In 1939, Lucien Schlatter, at the beginning of his career at Gangloff, was asked to design this exceptional streamlined Bugatti Type 57 coupe for a client. A few months later the war began, fine coachbuilding halted and this car was not built in 1939. Flash forward fifty years to 1989, The owner of the Type 57 Bugatti chassis no. 57524 approached Lucien Schlatter, now in his seventies, and asked if he would be willing to finish the details of his sleek original 1939 design as a replacement body for his car. Schlatter accepted and after half a century, this beautiful car is the result. The Gangloff Coupe body was built from Schlatter’s design and direction by a British coachbuilder specializing in historic cars from the 1930s. An original Bugatti factory supercharger was added to the 3.3 liter twin cam Type 57 engine. The chassis and mechanicals are all period correct original Bugatti components. Recently, the car was mechanically restored which includes the engine, water pump, brakes, and electrical. This Bugatti Gangloff Coupe was featured in the book Fantastique Bugatti, Editions EPA, 1995 (a copy of which is included with the sale of this car) and was listed on Pinterest as one of the most beautiful cars of all time.
